KMCC snapshot

Exchange

The KMCC Mall Ramstein was the first in Europe to receive the new "Exchange"  logo Dec. 15, 2010.    The Army and Air Force Exchange (AAFES) unveiled the new corporate brand image, including a new logo--a red-and-blue "X" and name change to the "Exchange" in September.  The brand had its debut at Tinker AFB followed by KMCC Mall here, setting the stage for a complete corporate transition and worldwide rollout. Despite the rebranding, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service is the corporate legal name and it will not change. The current AAFES-star/bars and BX/PX logos will no longer be used, as the new "X" replaces the existing logo. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Desiree Whitney Esposito)

KMCC project history

With the December 2005 closure of Rhein-Main Air Base, Ramstein AB became the new "Gateway to Europe" for thousands of travelers transiting the European theater. The KMC Center is designed to provide a one-stop shopping center for travelers and those stationed in the KMC. The consolidated facility is approximately 800,000 square feet (78,000 square meters) and includes an eight-story, 350-room visiting quarters facility.

This is the first time that the Army and Air Force Exchange Service and Air Force Services have collocated major business operations. Other Exchange facilities included are a four-plex movie theater, Power Zone, Outdoor Living, Toyland/Four Seasons, food court, new car sales and other vendors in an American-style mall layout. The Exchange shopping center features some concessionaires available for the first time on U.S. Air Force installations-- stateside and overseas--as well as a large variety of specialty stores from the local community and the United States.

The south end of the facility includes a spacious Outdoor Recreation facility complete with a two-story climbing wall, the Ramstein Tickets and Tours office, Romano's Macaroni Grill restaurant and a Rooney's.

The Exchange and 86th Force Support Squadron are committed to working with local agencies for representation in the KMCC. While the KMC Center offers many American conveniences for the KMC, it also provides information about unique products and services offered at off-base restaurants and stores within the community, further strengthening the long-standing German-American friendship in the region.

The project totaled approximately $170 million and was the largest single facility construction project in the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Department of Defense. Construction began with preliminary site clearing in November 2003 and a groundbreaking in the summer 2004. The facility is oened throughout summer 2009, with the Visiting Quarters opening first, followed by the Exchange shopping center. The new facility greatly enhances the quality of life for the people of the KMC.
