37th AS drops paratroops over Normandy for D-Day 73

U.S. and German military members jump out of a U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, over Sainte-Mere-Eglise, France, June 4, 2017. The jumps were performed using static lines. A static line is a fixed cord attached to the aircraft at one end and a deployment bag at the other. When the paratrooper jumps out of the aircraft, the line tightens which then pulls the deployment bag out of the container on the paratrooper’s back revealing the parachute. This event commemorates the 73rd anniversary of D-Day, the largest multinational amphibious landing and operational military airdrop in history, and highlights the U.S.' steadfast commitment to European allies and partners. Overall, approximately 400 U.S. service members from units in Europe and the U.S. are participating in ceremonial D-Day 73 events from May 31-June 7, 2017.
