Flugtag

Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente, 86th Airlift Wing commander, renders a salute during a ceremony at the North Side Chapel commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Flugtag tragedy Aug. 28 on Ramstein Air Base. The Flugtag ’88 air show was originally designed as an open house to the public. The air show quickly became a tradition at Ramstein and grew to become the largest event throughout Western Europe for more than 25 years. During the last scheduled flight of the air show on Aug. 28, three Italian aircraft collided while attempting to enact the “Pierced Heart” maneuver. Ramstein now commemorates this tragedy with an annual wreath laying ceremony to honor the fallen men and women that lost their lives that day. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Jordan Castelan)
