An active-duty 86th Maintenance Squadron Airman died from injuries sustained Wednesday in a one-car accident at approximately 7:30 a.m. near Building 2130 on the east side of the air base.

Airman 1st Class Jonathan Santos-Carvajal, 20, of Yuba City, Calif., was taken to Westpfalz Klinikum, a local hospital, where he was declared dead at 9:23 a.m. A passenger in the vehicle was injured and taken to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for treatment and released.

"Airman 1st Class Jonathan Santos-Carvajal was a valuable member of the 86th Airlift Wing and we are deeply saddened by his untimely loss," said Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente, 86th Airlift Wing commander. "He will be sorely missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his friends."

Santos-Carvajal arrived at Ramstein in May 2013 after technical school training and was assigned as an aerospace maintenance apprentice.

According to initial reports, Santos-Carvajal attempted to pass another vehicle, lost control of his car, and collided with a boulder on the side of the road. The incident remains under investigation and more details will be provided when available.
