During a post-flight maintenance inspection of an 86th Airlift Wing assigned C-130J on Sunday night at Ramstein Air Base, the body of an apparent stowaway was found in a compartment above the aircraft's rear landing gear. American and German emergency responders were summoned, removed the body, and transported to a German facility for autopsy and further investigation.

The deceased was a black male. The aircraft had just returned from supporting U.S. Africa Command operations, with stops in a few countries. At this point, it is unknown where or when the deceased entered the landing gear wheel well.

The location of the body did not impact the function or flight of the aircraft, nor would it be visible during standard pre- and post-flight inspections. The body was only discovered during a detailed post-flight inspection by 86 AW maintenance personnel.

The cause of death, as well as the other circumstances of the incident, remains under investigation. German officials are taking charge of attempting to identify the individual.
