A suspicious package was placed outside of the West Gate today at 3:00 a.m. by an individual identified as a 32-year old male from Ludwigshafen.

As a precautionary measure, the individual was apprehended by 86th Airlift Wing Security Forces, and German Polizei subsequently took him into custody.  Explosive ordnance experts from the German State Investigation Authority inspected the package and the man's vehicle and confirmed that there was no threat to the base.

As a result of this incident, the West Gate was closed for approximately five hours.  Personnel working at Ramstein Air Base were authorized delayed reporting while the situation was resolved.

"Through outstanding coordination and quick responses by our Security Forces and our host nation authorities, we were able to determine there was no threat to the base," said Brig. Gen. Jon Thomas, commander of the 86th Airlift Wing. "The safety of our people and security of our installation are our top priorities and we take every precaution to ensure a safe environment for our Airmen, personnel and German neighbors."

The incident is being investigated further by German Polizei.
