Volcanic ash impacts airspace at Ramstein Published April 16, 2010 RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany -- Due to volcanic activity in Iceland, all air travel between Germany and the United States has been cancelled by European air authorities, to include flights in and out of Ramstein Air Base. Though the airfield here remains open, the airspace closure impacts military air travel to and from Ramstein. Flights previously scheduled to arrive at Ramstein have either been canceled or diverted to nearby airfields in Europe not impacted by the closure. As of this morning, German authorities have halted flights to most of the country's 16 international airports due to a cloud from Iceland's erupting volcano as it moves over the country. Duration of this condition is unpredictable, but expected to extend into the weekend. Officials recommend travelers contact their air carriers for updates and rescheduling information. More information will be released as it is available.
