Halloween: have fun, be safe

  • Published
As Halloween in the Kaiserslautern Military Community begins to unfold. Safety officials remind everyone of some tips to keep your little ghouls and goblins safe.

1. Costumes should be made of flame retardant material. If they are home made, make sure and use either a fire retardant spray or fabric that has been treated with a fire retardant.

2. Make sure your child's costume has reflector strips, a flash light or light stick to make them more visible at night.

3. Do not include shoes with large heels or long costumes that children can trip over.

4. If they are carrying a prop such as a scythe or sword, make sure they are made out of a flexible plastic .

5. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure that the eye holes are big enough to see not only in front but peripherally as well. You may have to cut them open further yourself.

6. If your child is going out with a group, make their costume unique so they can be seen them easily in a crowded area. Utilizing flashing lights or jewelry to make them stand out can be a fun way to ensure their quick recognition

Trick or treating will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 30 on Ramstein, Vogelweh and Landstuhl Family Housing Areas. All personnel should limit vehicle traffic throughout the housing areas to promote safety.

The Passenger terminal will also provide X-ray services to those wishing to have their candy examined as a precautionary measure.

"Pumpkin patrols" will be out in housing areas to help with traffic control and ensure children don't get separated from their parents -- all in an effort to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone.
