KMC cleanup days scheduled for Dec. 9, 10 Published Dec. 1, 2010 By 86th Civil Engineer Group RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany -- Cleaning of our work areas and residences is sometimes neglected due to the busy operational tempo of the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Setting aside time, specifically for the upkeep of our facilities, helps to maintain a clean work and living area, andĀ improves the working environment and the appearance of our on-base housing and dormitories. To help with this effort, KMC leadership has designated the Fall Cleanup event for Dec. 9 and 10 and all Ramstein, Vogelweh, Kapaun and Einsiedlerhof facility managers, Military Family Housing stairwell, and dormitory residents should participate. The first day, Dec. 9, is designated for cleaning of installation work facilities, grounds and common areas across the KMC by facility managers and building occupants. Outdoor objectives include general cleanup including litter collecting. If weather permits, tasks should include weed pulling, trimming overgrown shrubs, tidying plant beds, removing tree limbs and pine cones and raking/bagging leaves. As a reminder, areas-of-responsibility extend 100 feet in all directions from buildings, to include nearby parking lots and sidewalks. Interior suggestions include cleaning stairwells/entries/carpets, cleaning out storage rooms, purging old files, washing windows and perhaps even doing some minor touch-up painting. The Self-Help Store (Bldg 510, DSN: 480-5034) provides tools and supplies to facility managers for work areas on Ramstein, Vogelweh, Kapaun and Einsiedlerhof. "The store has a variety of equipment, tools and materials available to assist in this fall cleanup" said Holger Graf, Self-Help Store manager. The store also has biodegradable bags for your weeds and leaves. Facility managers may check-out many types of hand/power tools, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, power washers, rakes, shovels, etc that can help facility managers get this work done. On Dec. 10, the focus will shift to cleaning MFH stairwell and dormitory buildings. Objectives include weeding, trimming, raking, bagging, etc. "Take the time to attend to your communities, including common areas like playgrounds, walkways and areas around the underground trash containers" said Benjamin Hizon, KMC Housing Office deputy director. "This is a great opportunity to team with your neighbors to foster community pride in the areas where you live and play and model responsibility to your children." Military Family Housing residents may check out supplies from their nearest U-Fix-It Store: Ramstein (Bldg 859, 06371-46-39520), Vogelweh (Bldg 1049, 0631-357-90915), Landstuhl (Bldg 3748, 06371-46-39510). Cleanup participants should separate tree branches/shrubs into two piles at curbside--one for small wood stems up to 4 inches in diameter and another for larger material. Place bio-degradable bagged weeds and leaves at curbside, but well away from dumpsters. Member of the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron will pick-up tree limbs, bagged leaves and weeds at curbside for later composting. Non bio-degradable items should be bagged and disposed of in garbage dumpsters. Items like batteries, glass, bulk paper and metal should be taken to the nearest recycling center (Ramstein, Bldg 5146, near KMCC; Kapaun, Bldg 2820, across from vehicle processing).
