Firefighters worked though the night Sunday to contain a blaze that destroyed the Kleber Kaserne shoppette.

At 11:50 p.m., emergency services personnel were alerted to the fire. Civilian firefighters from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, plus German firefighters, responded to the scene to find the building engulfed in flames. No one was injured.

The power to the building was cut while the fire was fought. By 5:45 a.m., the fire was out. The Child Development Center, a daycare program for children in military families, was closed Monday because the power was still off and is expected to remain closed through this week.

Beginning at noon today, parents of children who attend the CDC should call Parent Central Services to find out exactly where to take their children beginning tomorrow. The number is DSN 493-4516 or 4122 or Civ 0631-3406-4516 or 4122. They will be open until 7 p.m. today to take these requests; parents are asked not to call the CDC directly.

In addition to the shoppette, offices and classrooms for civilian training were destroyed.

The building also houses civilian personnel records and training areasĀ for contracted security guards. The damage is being accessed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
