ADVON team arrives at RAF Fairford

RAF FAIRFORD, England --  The advance echelon team, or ADVON, comprised of 14 service members from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and the 86th Airlift Wing with help from the 5th Quartermaster Company arrived at RAF Fairford, April 19.

The behind-the-scenes team traveled to the bare base to make final preparations for the 37th Airlift Squadron's off-station training, scheduled to begin April 23.

"We are here to make sure everything is ready when the OST begins Monday," said Tech Sgt. Renee Morales, 435th Air Mobility Squadron loadmaster and ADVON team lead. "It is essential that all of the loose ends are tied so the 120 members arriving can begin their work/sleep cycles as soon as they arrive."

The team included five security forces members, two aerial porters, a vehicle mechanic, an air traffic controller, two loadmasters, two crew chiefs and two parachute riggers; all responsible for everything from setting up lodging to securing security forces vehicles.

"We have to prepare to set up real-world security for this training," said Master Sgt. Julian Stovall, 435th Security Forces Squadron member. "As soon as the aircraft touches down, real-world security starts."

After an initial meeting with base directors and managers, the team dispersed to complete their individual inspections and duties.

"As a crew chief on this team, it is my responsibility to set up everything that is needed for the inbound aircraft and 54 aircraft maintainers," said Master Sgt. Shane Hiett, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief. "From hangar space to necessary vehicles, I ensure that my guys have what they need to perform their job."

The ADVON team sought out to find what is needed; the services, personnel and buildings that are essential to mission success.

"We are warming up the base," said Morales. "We are finding shortfalls and capabilities of Fairford and making sure all the bases are covered."
