RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany -- Happy Holidays KMC! There is some good news on the COVID vaccine front. Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Moderna vaccine under Emergency Use Authorization. This is the second vaccine (following Pfizer the previous week) to receive approval. Immunizations have started in the United States following a priority system recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At Ramstein, we are actively planning for the vaccine, as well. Our priority system will follow a similar phased approach outlined by the Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency, which places First Responders and medical personnel at the forefront.
These FDA approvals have been based on extensive testing and trials, and the DoD is confident in the safety and efficacy of the vaccines. The vaccines are important to protect our population and our force, especially those in our population at higher risk. Tragically, the daily deaths attributed to COVID in the United States is similar to the number who died during the 9/11 attacks and at Pearl Harbor. Two to three thousand Americans are dying each day. Let that sink in. On a separate note, COVID affected the way new members in-processed this year. The 86th Medical Group would like to ensure that you and your family have properly enrolled into the TRICARE Overseas Program (TOP). All arriving members should have stopped by the TRICARE Service Center after quarantine to provide a copy of their orders and enrollment paperwork. If this was not accomplished within 90 days of arrival, the command sponsored active duty family members will be defaulted to TOP Select coverage. TOP Select is a self-managed, preferred-provider option for those who are not enrolled in TOP Prime (this makes you space available in the clinic). If you were able to schedule an appointment since you arrived, then you are enrolled. Otherwise, you will want to check your enrollment by emailing the TRICARE Service Center at: usaf.ramstein.86-mdg.list.mdss-tricare-enrollments-all@mail.mil
Next week I will discuss more on the influenza vaccine front as we try to manage COVID and influenza vaccines at the same time. Stay safe and healthy. Wash your hands, watch your distance, and wear your face covering!
