A street sign posts on Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Aug. 3, 2017. Circa 1940, a construction accident of what is today's autobahn 6 left a section of the autobahn that could not be used. The unused autobahn was repurposed as an airstrip by the advancing U.S. Army Air Forces during the final months of World War II. That same strip of road was later used as the airstrip for Landstuhl Air Base in the 1950s. Now, that same location is home to Kisling Memorial Drive, the main road linking the east and west gates of Ramstein Air Base. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning)
