The 65th Air Base Squadron (ABS) was activated on 13 June 2019 and is an aggregation of the previous 65th Operational Support Squadron, 65th Security Forces Squadron, and 65th Communication Squadron.  

The Squadron provides protection and communication support of U.S. personnel and assets; 24-hour airfield operations and maintenance support; and monitorization and maintenance of the High Frequency Global Communications System (HFGCS) and the MarkIVB weather antenna.

Created on 10 July 2020, the 765th Air Base Squadron (ABS) consolidated what was previously the 65th Civil Engineer Squadron, the 65th Contracting Squadron, and the 65th Force Support Squadron into a single unit. Today, the 765 ABS has approximately 300 members across its six different flights.  

The Squadron provides support to the installation through infrastructure planning, construction, maintenance, and operations, fire response and emergency management, contracting execution, housing management, lodging operations, postal services, food operations, and other community support and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) functions.   

The mission of the 765 ABS is to enable mission success across all Lajes Field activities through excellence in Force Support, Civil Engineering, and Contracting.

The 65th Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS) is one of the four units assigned to the 65th Air Base Group (ABG) and is stationed at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. 

The 65 LRS, the oldest unit in the 65 ABG and the only holistic Squadron remaining with lineage to the 65th Air Base Wing, is comprised of five flights: operations compliance, deployment and distribution, material management, vehicle management, and fuels management. Its mission is to expert powering DoD’s trans-Atlantic air bridge through sustained superior logistics and supply chain support for team Lajes, U.S. forces and global partners. 

The Atlantic Log Dogs provide the sole military refueling and defueling capability in the North Atlantic and directly support all operations conducted by the Portuguese Air Force to include Medical Evacuations (MEDEVAC) and Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, enabling coverage for a 245 thousand populous and two million square mile area. In addition, on April 2023 the 65 LRS obtained for the first time ever the certification for hot pit refueling operations of a Portuguese Air Force EH-101 helicopter, reducing ground time for SAR missions by seventy percent, and since then enabling over 500 rescues and strengthening even further the partnership between the two nations.

The 496th Air Base Squadron is a unique and diverse unit with over 40 AFSCs across seven flights (Airfield Operations, Logistics, Civil Engineering, Force Support, Contracting, Security Forces, and Communications) and a headquarters staff (HQ) providing base operating support and senior airfield authority to permanent, deployed, and transient forces at Morón Air Base, Spain.  

As the host and sole U.S. Squadron at Morón, the 496 ABS is responsible for the U.S. installation, which is only one of two major U.S. military installations in Spain (USAFE’s only installation in Spain), as well as the MAJCOM’s longest runway.  

The unit partners closely with the Spanish Air and Space Force and supports all resident members, their families, transient personnel, and contingency operations that include missions across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
