U.S. European Command has issued a travel restriction for Department of Defense (DOD) personnel to avoid non-mission essential travel to Munich, Germany on June 4 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen from June 7-8, due to potential violent demonstrations. Protests are scheduled at both locations during these dates as the result of the G7 Summit.

The G7 Summit is an annual meeting of the heads of state from seven leading industrial nations: United States of America, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, Canada, and Germany. This year's summit will be hosted by Angela Merkel, German Chancellor at Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps near Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Anti-globalization activists and other activists against the G7 summit announced a series of protests with attendance expected to number in the thousands. Due to the size of these protests and the possibility of violence, Commander of U.S. European Command has directed travel restrictions for all DOD personnel in Munich, Germany on June 4 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen from June 7-8. DOD Family members, sponsored personnel and contractors are strongly encouraged to avoid these restricted areas.

DoD personnel will avoid any areas of public demonstration throughout Germany during June 4-8, 2015. Personnel stationed at or who reside near these locations will be restricted to mission essential travel and tasks only during these dates.

In addition, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic have increased border control measures in an effort to curve potentional violent protests by anti-G7 demonstrators.

Check your travel documents and ensure you are complying with travel regulations to prevent denied entry, unauthorized entry or delays, if traveling to a foreign country.
