Rock climbing at Ramstein's Outdoor Recreation Center

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany --  A break from school, Ramstein's summer camp students enjoyed the rock wall at the Outdoor Recreation Center on Ramstein Air Base, Germany, July 12, 2012.

The Outdoor Recreation's $28 million facility offers something for climbers of all abilities. It's textured composite-material rock wall stands taller than 30 feet on some routes. 

For beginners, there is ropeless small bouldering, buffered with big yellow gymnast mats for a comfortable landing.  Experienced climbers can own the inverted tower that looks like a huge, rugged, caution traffic cone. The climbing route possibilities are endless.

To climb the wall at Ramstein, individuals are required to take a 45-minute "Climbing 101" to learn the basics of fitting a harness, tying knots and belaying.
