The Military Housing Office (MHO) is ready to support you in the transition to your new home and community. Use the resources provided to become familiar with the housing options and support services available to you.
When you arrive at Lajes Field, you must visit the MHO. This visit is necessary to obtain housing, verify your eligibility for Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA), and receive counseling and guidance before entering any written lease or rental/sales contract for housing. It is advised to wait until you arrive to secure housing to tour available units.
Unaccompanied Housing
Currently at Lajes Field all military and civilians are living off base. There are no quarters available on base. For more information, contact your Military Housing Office (MHO).
Off Base Housing / Housing in the Local Community
The Housing Management Office (HMO) provides all DoD personnel with a personalized service to assist in locating suitable housing in the Azores. Moving overseas can often be confusing and stressful, however, it can also be exciting. Living within the local community provides members and families the chance to experience a new culture and make friends with their host country neighbors. The HMO will assist you every step of the way to help you find your new home in the local community.
During the initial housing briefing, you will be given a map and a link (www.homes.mil/) and pertinent information regarding the local off base community. You will be provided access to information concerning available rental listings (including rental price, location, utilities payable, number of bedrooms, pictures, etc). Once you have determined which available unit(s) fit your needs, contact the HMO to schedule an appointment to view the unit(s). As the schedule permits and as a courtesy service.
After you choose the unit you want to rent, the HMO will set up an initial inspection and the government furnishings delivery. Rent is required to be paid in advance.
Housing Services
Contact the HMO as soon as you know you are moving. The government housing team will provide you the latest information on the local housing situation as well as local laws governing off-base housing.
The HMO provides the following services:
Pets/Quarantine
Not authorized to ship pets to Lajes, Azores, however, members may out of personal expense.
Referral and Relocation Assistance
Developing a sense of community here starts before you arrive at Lajes Field. We recognize the efforts behind this transition and want to make sure you are satisfied with the details of your move. To obtain Referral and Relocation Assistance we encourage you to reach out for personalized services provided by the MHO staff.
Planning Your Move
Moving to an overseas location requires additional planning to make sure you and your family are prepared for the transition. There are many things you can do before you arrive to ensure the process to get settled in your new home and community is seamless.
Power Requirements
The electrical current in both housing areas are 220 volts and 50 cycles as opposed to 110 volts and 60 cycles in the United States. Transformers for use with small electrical appliances are available through the government Furnishings Management Office (FMO).
Housing Allowances
Military members are entitled to various allowances to ensure the transition to a new location is as smooth and stress free as possible. If you have any questions about the allowances listed, please contact the MHO.
Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) and Move-In Housing Allowance (MIHA)
For overseas areas only, individuals moving into community housing may be eligible for OHA and MIHA. Specific circumstances, conditions, and requirements of OHA or MIHA are identified in the Joint Federal Travel Regulations.
These extra allowances are in place to off-set the higher costs of living in overseas communities. OHA is a reimbursement and based on actual expenses for rental and utility/recurring maintenance allowances. It is adjusted every pay period for changes in exchange rates.
Members are also authorized a one-time Move-In Housing Allowance (MIHA). This allowance is provided for the purchase of supplemental items not normally available in foreign housing, but considered standard when renting in the community at U.S. locations such as window coverings, light fixtures, electricity connection, etc.
For more information about your OHA and MIHA, visit the Defense Travel Management Office website (www.travel.dod.mil/).
Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA)
When you arrive at Lajes Field, you will be staying in temporary accommodations until you move into permanent quarters. TLA is an entitlement to partially offset the more-than-normal expenses incurred during occupancy of temporary lodging.
Prior to your arrival, please work with your sponsor to secure temporary accommodations. Your sponsor can advise whether you will reside in an on-base Temporary Lodging Facility (TLF), a local hotel or an off-base TLF-type facility. Please remember to keep all receipts for lodging, meals, and laundry.
For more information about TLA and TLFs at Lajes Field, please contact MHO.
Living Quarters Allowance (LQA) for Civilian Employees
Civilian employees recruited from the U.S. are required to live in the local community and may be entitled to receive a Living Quarters Allowance (LQA). LQA is in addition to other allowances and, in most instances, covers most of the costs of housing, heat, electricity, trash, water, and sewer service.
The maximum allowable rates depend on the location of the duty assignment, the grade of the employee and how many dependents are living with the employee. It is important for individuals to know that LQA is a reimbursement and based on actual expenses. It is adjusted every pay period for changes in monetary exchange rates. For more information on LQA please visit the State Department website.
Additional Questions?
If you have any questions or require additional support, please contact the MHO for more information about preparing for your move to this location.
Saturday-Sunday: Closed
You are welcome to bring pets to the Azores, but it will be on your own to arrange and pay for pet-shipping.
Contact your local FMFL.
You might need to travel through Lisbon, schedule a minimum 6-hour layover, and pre-coordinate travel with the veterinarian at the Lisbon Airport. Pet-friendly rooms are not available on-base, so a pet-sitter at an off-base kennel is required.
Before moving to the Azores, contact your U.S. phone carrier for international service options and conduct a cost estimate.
There is NO military clothing sales store on the island. You should bring extra uniform items, especially if you will be promoted during your tour. You are required to bring your Utility Uniforms and you might need Service Dress uniforms too. Physical training (PT) uniforms are required – be sure to bring long PT pants and a jacket.
Note: It is highly recommended to pack a uniform in your carry-on bag in case your luggage is misplaced.
You are required to undergo a medical screening upon receipt of our orders to transfer to an overseas location. The screening must be completed at your current MTF (Medical Treatment Facility).
Additionally, you must ensure Individual Medical Readiness requirements are current for the duration of your 1-yr tour. Bring a 1-yr supply of medications.
There is no on-base hospital or pharmacy, but the Medical Aid Station (MAS) at Lajes Field provides basic support to military members only. The MAS provides limited assistance to dependents requesting an appointment with a Local (Tricare approved) provider.
