Martha Otto, a former South-Sudanese refugee, holds a photo of her nephew and nieces, whom, like Otto years ago, fled their civil war-torn country of South Sudan in search of safety from Joseph Kony’s Lord Resistance Army. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron training manager recently financially assisted her family out of a North Ugandan refugee camp and into boarding school and is passionate about sharing her story to help others. Kakuma refugee camp, situated in North West Kenya, was home for Staff Sgt. Martha Otto before immigrating to the U.S in 2000, later going on to serve in the U.S. Air Force. At the age of seven, the Ramstein Airman, was responsible for carrying a sack of salt as her family’s currency to trade for vegetables and beans, as they made their dangerous journey through the woodlands to a refugee camp in Northern Uganda.
