May 23rd began like any other Thursday, but events quickly transpired which proved the day would be anything

but ordinary. After a fire ignited on a back-up generator at Lajes, two professionals sprung to action.

Mrs. Maria Costa and Mr. Dinarco Coelho, both 65th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels distribution system workers, jumped to action and quite literally saved the day.

Relying on their comprehensive fire prevention training, both individuals instinctively reacted to relay an emergency message to the Lajes Fire Department and Fuels Service Center. Before emergency responders even arrived, the two utilized nearby fire extinguishers and contained the fire. This dynamic duo prevented the spread of a fire to the Fuels Management Flight’s $82 million dollar facility and ensured the safety of personnel inside.

Costa credited her extensive training for helping prepare her for the unexpected.

These two individuals ensured Lajes’ mission of enabling expeditionary movement in support of Joint, Coalition, and NATO operations continued uninterrupted. For these actions, they were lauded by Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander and named Airlifters of the Week.

The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th Airlift Wing the World’s Best Wing.

Maria Costa and Dinarco Coelho, 65th Logistics Readiness Squdron fuels distribution system workers were awarded Airlifter of the Week by Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, on June 12, at Lajes Field, Azores.
