Women’s History Month commemorates and encourages the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history such as:

• Esther Blake, the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Air Force in 1948.
• Maj. Gen. Marcelite J. Harris, the first African-American female general officer of the U.S. Air Force and, prior to her retirement in 1997, the highest-ranking female officer in the U.S. Air Force and the highest ranking African-American woman in the Department of Defense.
• Col. Jacqueline Cochran, the first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic Ocean and the first female pilot to break the sound barrier in 1953.
These are but a few of the incredible women whose accomplishments and contributions to our service and our country are celebrated throughout the month of March.

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed a law authorizing and requesting the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed another law designating the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.”
